When I was a second-year trainee in 1956, Michael and Enid Balint began their regular visits to Cincinnati at Levine’s initiative. The very first visit was a revelation to Anna and me. We suddenly realized what psychoanalytic psychotherapy could be like, even before we began our psychoanalytic training.

Balint was very well known at the time. Naturally, I volunteered to pick him up at the airport. He had lived in England after getting out of Hungary in time. Michael Balint was born Bergsmann in Budapest in 1896 and converted from Judaism to Unitarian Christianity. He was 60 then and I was 32 when we met. I spoke a little Hungarian with him. We had much in common, and he liked my entire family. I didn’t like the way he had changed his name and left his Jewishness behind, but I was deeply influenced by several aspects of the way he practiced psychotherapy.
